Dear Guests, Welcome to my blog which I treat like a creative garden where I regularly plant and change this and that be it poetry, philosophy, an Oboe Brilliance lesson, an essay of some kind, or a journal about composing. Visit every Monday for oboe coaching which is also helpful for many melodic instrumentalists. Musically yours, Kathryn

"How do you compose?" That is the most commonly asked question I hear.
This blog is a window into my creative process and philosophies as a composer and instrumentalist. At times it may contain music, photos, and poetry as well. May you enjoy, return, and benefit!

The Secrets of Ravens

Dear Guests,

"The Secrets of Ravens" is a set of 7 duets for oboe - work in progress. So far, 4 of the 7 are composed and the first 3 have been premiered. Excerpts of the second and third duets are currently available to hear on this site. My student Cheryl Tuttle and I were recorded during a live performance in Feb 2009.

As soon as I have all seven composed, probably by or before June of this year, I'll put them together in a book to make available for oboe playing enjoyment.

Of course flutists, violinists and such might have fun with them too.

I was first inspired to compose music of ravens while reading a book - not sure which one as I've read almost all - by Pema Chodron. You might want to check out her writings. Pema wrote about the ravens of Nova Scotia in a tree during a hurricane.

As an oboist and teacher of oboe, I like to think of my oboe works in terms of levels of technical proficiency required to play the pieces. These duets are scored for what I term levels III and IV - intermediate to semi pro level. Perfect for high school kids, college students, oboe minors or amateurs - as well as oboists capable of more!

I'll keep you posted.

Musically yours,
Kathryn
